GABA - the Ideal Food Ingredient
GABA is considered as one of the most important compounds in food and pharmaceutical industries. GABA is the ideal green food ingredient and drug in preventing diseases and improving body functions. It is shown that intake of 30~50 mg per day of GABA can effectively protect the body from diseases. GABA has been widely integrated into beverages, cocoa products, chocolate products, candy and baked goods. Many famous GABA containing foods had already been developed in 20th Century, such as GABA Rice Germ (Oryza, Japan), Aquarius Sharp Charge (Coca-Cola) and GABA Tieguanyin Tea (Anxi Tea, China) etc. In Western and Japan, GABA is a popular term in functional food and health categories.
GABA is an amino acid found throughout the animal and plant kingdoms, exists in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of animals. As the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, it activates the blood flow and increases the oxygen supply in the brain to enhance metabolic function of brain cells. GABA is recognized to improve conditions such as post-stroke sequellae, tinnitus, amnestic syndrome, mild depression, and headaches caused by encephalopathy arteriosclerosis. GABA is also effective for lowering blood pressure by working on vasomotor center of the medulla oblongata.
Numerous studies provide evidence that GABA can remarkably decline blood pressure and lower triglyceride (TG) levels in the blood stream. In addition, GABA is reported to activate alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which serves as a barometer for hepatic function and causes decreased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels associated with improved renal function. Six health-giving effects are summarized as follows:
  1. The Inhibitory Effect on Hypertension
It acts in vasomotor center to promote the vascular expansion and effective lowers the blood pressure.
  1. Ataractic Effect, Promotion of Sleep and Relieving of Stress
It is demonstrated as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and binds to the anxiolytic receptor in brain to activate cerebral blood flow and increase the supply of oxygen to promote the anxiolytic effect.
  1. Positive Effects on Renal and Hepatic Function
GABA inhibits the decarboxylation of glutamate in blood which promotes the excretion of urea formed from blood ammonia and. Lower Blood urea nitrogen levels are associated with increased renal function, which helps prevent hypertension.
  1. Prevention of Obesity and Maintaining Fitness
It prevents skin aging, eliminates body odor, promotes lipid metabolism by sharply decreasing the triglyceride (TG) level in the liver and in the blood, prevents arteriosclerosis and promotes body weight loss efficiently. It is proved that the causes of Hintington disease and Alzheimer’s disease highly relates to GABA deficiency.
  1. Ethyl Alcohol and Acetaldehyde Metabolism
GABA can lower the blood aldehyde, therefore decreases the effects of hangovers and nausea from drinking.
  1. Improvement of Brain Activity
GABA enters into the TCA cycle in brain eventually promotes brain cell metabolism, improves glucose uptakes, increases the formation of acetylcholine and restores the function of brain cells.
